Sagicor Group Jamaica Limited is seeking a suitable candidate to join our Group Legal, Trust & Corporate Secretarial team in the capacity of: Assistant Manager - Legal Services
- Provide corporate and legal support to the business and shared services units and assist in managing legal risks on behalf of the company and its subsidiaries.
- Provide legal advice and ongoing legal support to the business units and functional areas particularly in relation to complex legal tasks/ issues through the review of contracts and general legal advice.
- Proactively manage litigation risks and in consultation with the Vice President - General Counsel & Corporate Secretary and the
- Assistant Vice President - Legal Counsel, assess and determine contentious matters to be referred to external Attorneys:
- Monitor external Counsel on litigation matters and ensure timely updates are provided within agreed timelines.
- Make recommendations for suit or settlement options.
- Ensure ongoing risk assessments of any pending claims or matters in litigation.
- Ensure representation at court and court-appointed mediations, labour tribunal, for and on behalf of the Company and attend court to oversee the conduct of matters.
- Prepare and review contracts for the company.
- In consultation with the relevant parties, research and advise on complex legal issues in the areas of banking, investments, insurance, conveyancing, pensions law or other relevant statutes.
- Undertake conveyancing matters on behalf of entities within the group.
- Assist in the negotiation and preparation of contracts on behalf of the company.
- Provide corporate secretarial support to assigned subsidiary boards and committees of the entities within the Sagicor Group.
- Assist with administrative functions of the department as assigned.
- Identify legal trends and report on issues which may impact the company’s operations including new legislation and regulations or case law and develop training material for presentation to management and/ or functional areas.
- Review and interpret monitoring orders and other court orders issued under the Proceeds of Crime Act or other applicable legislation to ensure compliance with the monitoring orders/ regulations.
- Provide legal support to the business units on fraud cases and police investigations.
- Perform other related duties assigned from time to time.
What do you need?
- Bachelor's degree in Law from a recognized tertiary institution.
- Successful completion of the Certificate of Legal Education.
- Has been admitted to practice at the Jamaican Bar or is in the process of being admitted.
- A minimum of two years’ working experience as a practicing attorney, in the areas of conveyancing, debt collection, litigation and commercial work.
- Sound knowledge of the Insurance Act, Banking Services Act, Companies Act, Income Tax Law, Financial Services Commission Act, Securities Act, the Pensions Act, General Consumption Tax Act, Proceeds of Crime Act, the Registration of Titles Act, the Registration (Strata Titles) Act and other relevant laws governing the operations of the Company and subsidiaries.

- Sound knowledge of computer software packages including spreadsheet and word processing applications.
