JOBSPREE - JLP Promises 250,000 Jobs

THE JAMAICA Labour Party (JLP) is promising to create 250,000 jobs over the next five years if it forms the Government after the February 25 general election.

Opposition Leader Andrew Holness made the pledge to the country at a JLP meeting in Junction, St Elizabeth, where he expressed that he was eager to get the opportunity to lead Jamaica again as prime minister.

National Minimum Wage Increase to take effect March 1, 2016

Minister of Labour and National Security Dr. Fenton Ferguson recently announced the new 10.7 per cent increase in the national minimum wage and 8 per cent increase for security guards.
The minimum wage for industrial security guards will move from $8,198 for a 40-hour work week to $8,854 for a 40-hour work week.

More US Jobs Coming - American Hospitality Sector Looking For 3,000 Jamaican Workers

Indications are that some 3,000 Jamaicans will get jobs under the United States overseas hospitality programme this year as several new employers enter the market.

The projection was made by Minister of Labour and Social Security Dr Fenton Ferguson last Wednesday as he hosted five US recruiters at the Hilton Rose Hall in Montego Bay, St James.

The recruiters, some with relationships with Jamaica going back 17 years, were in the island seeking to employ more than 260 seasonal Jamaican hospitality workers for the states of North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Michigan.

Bridging the Skills Gap

According to the Statistical Institute of Jamaica, as of October 2006, the unemployment rate in Jamaica was 9.6%. While this represents an overall decline compared to say, 2004, unemployment in Jamaica is still high and that fact has become even more evident as new graduates hit the streets this year in search of jobs.
