POSITION PURPOSE:
The Head Pharmacist will be responsible for all supervisory and management function relating to the operation of the pharmacy department, spending up to 50% of time on supervisory and management duties. Provide full range of pharmacy services. Provide pharmaceutical products, drug use information, and pharmacy services to patients along with other pharmacist on staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following are specific responsibilities and contributions critical to the successful performance of the
position:

- Reviews and interprets physicians’ orders for appropriateness relevant to other departments (e.g., drugs for diagnostic procedures, laboratory tests) to ensure that overdoses or under-doses have not been prescribed and that interactions, incompatibilities or toxic compounds will not result from the combination of medications. Ensures that drugs are appropriately labeled, stored and utilized according to physicians’ instructions
- Dispenses prescriptions to customers in accordance with policy and in conformance with regulations and laws dealing with the class of prescription; counsels patients about their medications and maintains an accurate, up-to-date patient profile.
- Manage and provide quality professional dispensing service for customers, check medicines and prescriptions, and offer appropriate advice and guidance to meet customer needs.
- Foster the patient-pharmacist relationship and motivate patient cooperation toward the delivery of care.
- Provides pharmaceutical services to customers, and provides pre-packed drug products and drug handling, storage and use information, and education to the customers.
- Order pharmacy products and health products using company ordering systems to ensure that customer demands are met.
- Provides drug information such as dosing, compatibilities and formulary substitutes
- Maintains necessary controls with respect to audited controlled drugs; prepares controlled drug requests for delivery by a technician
- Supervises prepacking of drugs and control procedures.
- Coordinate the training and proficiency of the pharmacy personnel, including pharmacist students.
- Direct, coach and mentor pharmacy personnel and students; set goals and objectives for staff consistent with the department and corporate objectives; provide feedback and follow-up.
- Create an environment supportive of staff retention with a focus on staff contributions, influence and stress reduction.
- Request goods from other location on a weekly basis or as needed to replenish stock
- Prepare detailed list of items needed for your department to purchasing personnel on a weekly basis or as necessary to replenish stock take priority in handling customer request, ensure it is done timely and efficiently
- Communicate all discrepancies to relevant personnel

Direct all queries/ concerns to immediate supervisor first in keeping with the chain of command

Directs the delivery of pharmacy services.

Ensure a high standard of product knowledge among team members, through on the job- training;
interact with internal staff as well as external contacts in a competent and respectful manner. -
Provide drug information to support staff and participates in the education of personnel and students.

Acts as primary site preceptor for pharmacy student externs.

Ensure all staff are aware of and understand the company policies/ procedures/ protocol and standards expected when providing customer service.

Maintain efficient inventory management by implementing strict controls for the correct handling/ dispensing and storage of goods to minimize wastage.

Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Provides counseling to patients about proper use of prescribed medications; review patient’s past medication history at time of each visit and consults with the prescriber about any inconsistencies in therapy noted or the appropriateness of prescribed drugs

Develops, revise and implement policies and procedures, which ensure the operation of the pharmacy in compliance with the guidelines and standards of the Pharmacy Council, Pharmaceutical Association of Jamaica and the Ministry of Health, including the measurement of the quality and appropriateness of services.

Daily reviewing of all prescription orders.

Upkeep of patient medication histories in computer system.

Supervises the requisition and maintenance of supplies for the department.

Controls the utilization of department resources.

SUPPORTIVE FUNCTIONS:
In addition to performance of the essential functions above, this position may be required to perform a combination of other supportive functions, to be solely determined by the supervisor based upon the particular requirements of Fontana Limited.

- In order to properly service our clients, you may be required to work outside of our scheduled business hours.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

EXPERIENCE; EDUCATION OR CERTIFICATION
- A Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline, from a recognized tertiary institution
- Certification in pharmacology.
- Must be a Licensed Registered Pharmacist.
- At least 5 years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
- Certificate in supervisory management
