Description

Forest Technician – Bio-Physical Inventory (Level 5)

Basic Salary Range: $1,247,144.00 - $1,544,475.00 per annum, plus applicable allowances

JOB PURPOSE:

Under the direct supervision of the Forester, Forest Resource Assessment, the incumbent is responsible for implementing and monitoring forest resources through an integrated forest inventory programme. He/she will participate in inventory planning, design and sampling. He/she will abide by established protocols in data collection and ensure the forest resource inventory database is updated correctly and maintained, being compliant with the Agency’s standard operating procedures. The incumbent will also assist with the assessment and extraction approaches of non-timber forest products.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AREAS:

Administrative Responsibilities

Provides inputs for the operational plans, budget and the setting of priorities for the Branch;
Develop individual work plans that are aligned to organisational goals and objectives;
Prepares and submits progress reports following the agreed work plan;

Technical Responsibilities

  • Assists in locating permanent field plots with road navigation, interpreting maps and aerial photos, and using in-house geospatial data collection platforms.
  • Conduct field measurements according to specified inventory protocol which includes vegetation diversity and soil characteristics
  • Update forest resource inventory database
  • Quality check and verify all forest resource inventory data
  • Collate and process forest inventory data for purposes of forest resource management plans, reports and project development.
  • Conducts preliminary investigation of Forest Estates to identify tree species; environmental conditions such as soil type, climate and rainfall and length of time required
  • Represents the Agency at Technical for relating to natural resources and or forestry
  • Participates in the Agency’s public education and awareness programme
  • Any other duties that may be assigned from time to time

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:

Technical

  • Strong data collection and analytical skills
  • Ability to use topographic maps, compass, and aerial photos for road navigation, interpreting cover types, identifying point locations
  • Strong geospatial data collection skills with knowledge in the use of GPS and ArcGIS Collector
  • Sound knowledge of general safety (CPR and First Aid)
  • Understanding and experience with basic field forestry skills related to forest resource inventory
  • Ability to use office productivity tools efficiently and effectively (Excel, Word etc.)

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate Degree in Forestry, Agriculture, Natural Science, Environmental Management or related area
  • Two (2) years’ field experience in a related area

  • Any other acceptable combination of qualification and experience
